The Journal of Edmond de Goncourt

The brothers Edmond and Jules de Goncourt were unusually close and did all of their writing as a team. When Jules died in June of 1870, Edmond was devastated, but he continued the journal about life in Paris that the pair had been writing for decades. Below are links to some excerpts from these journals describing Paris during the war. The sections of the journals on the war, the siege of Paris, and the Commune have been translated as Paris under Siege, 1870-1871: From the Goncourt Journal (Ithaca, N.Y.: Cornell University Press, 1969).
